Lisbon (LPPT) 25th – 28th October 2021.

The following is a report from a non-spotting family break to Lisbon, Portugal (my first overseas trip since January 2020).

This was a break that was booked last year and had been rolled over a couple of times due to Covid, but finally with all the paperwork in order we found ourselves very early at a bustling Luton Airport on Monday the 25^th October and we were soon on our way onboard G-EZUA EZY A320. 2 hours and 30 minutes later we touched down on runway 03 at Lisbon (LPPT) in glorious sunshine.

The LCC’s at Lisbon use Terminal 2 but for some reason after disembarking we were bussed to Terminal 1 where we joined a painfully long non-EU queue for Border Control that took over 2 hours. Once through we took the metro to the centre for 3 euros each and went to our hotel to check in and dump the bags. The trip was a bit of an indulgence (for mine and my wifes 50^th Birthdays in 2020) and my wife had booked a Duplex room in the Intercontinental Hotel in the centre of town (very near the Parque Eduardo VII). Whilst expensive, the room (1823 on the 18th floor) had a generous sun terrace and to my surprise aircraft on finals for runway 03 passed by quite close to the hotel. A 300mm lens on a cropped sensor camera was just about enough for a B737 sized aircraft. Light was good for photography from about 09:00 – 11:00 after which the sun was a bit too high. As this was a family city break I didnt spend too long each day photographing from our room terrace – but with FR24 on a phone it was possible to keep half an eye on arrivals as they passed over the city whilst you are sight seeing. Lisbon itself is stunningly beautiful and I would thoroughly recommend a trip here for a city break – make sure you visit the Cais das Colunas to watch the sun set beneath the spans of the suspension bridge over the river Tagus! When heading back to the airport, it should be noted that views from Terminal 2 are non existent both land side and airside! Taxis are very cheap in Lisbon and it was cheaper to take a cab (10e) than the Metro for four people (12e). A fantastic place to visit and I will definitely be back.

Air travel is definitely picking up, with the terminal at Luton Airport looking decidedly busy as we queued for the easyJet bag drop.

Lisbon is a good place to catch up on your SATA fleet.

TAAG aircraft are not easily seen outside of Africa, however there are a few flights each week from Luanda to Lisbon. D2-TEJ rests on stand in the glorious sunshine 25th October 2021.

The scenes at Border Control were a bit chaotic with wait times over 2 hours to get through.
